Remembrances

Leaving a personal story, memory, or words of support for a pet’s family is a heartfelt way to pay tribute and provide comfort. As part of your remembrance, we also invite you to leave a virtual token along with your words — similar to our tradition here at the Sanctuary of leaving stones, beloved items, or small toys on the graves of cherished animals.
Noah was such a little sweetheart. He and Sunny were Rancho Cordova’s “top dogs” and loved playing together at the park. He was the most wonderful companion anyone could ask for and he’ll be missed every day. He’s smiling down from the Rainbow Bridge.

Love Song for Noah

Noah lived close to the ground,
but his presence carried upward,
a small, steady flame that teaches a room
how to feel inhabited.

For fourteen years he kept Jan’s nights whole,
settling beside her with the quiet authority
of someone who understood the assignment:
to guard, to witness, to stay.

He rang his bell with the clarity
of a creature who knew his own needs
and trusted the world to answer.

That small sound had a kind of grace—
a reminder that communication
does not require words,
only faith in the one who listens.

He was protective in the way
only a devoted companion can be—
choosing the midpoint between people,
placing himself exactly where loving care
could reach in both directions.

It was not vigilance born of fear,
but of belonging:
a geometry of loyalty drawn across the floorboards.

Now the nights are different.

The bed holds its shape, but not his warmth.
The silence is honest,
but it is not the silence Noah made—
the kind that settled gently because he was there to anchor it.

Grief arrives in small, precise moments:
the instinct to check the doorway,
the phantom weight at the edge of the mattress,
the pause before listening for a bell that will not ring.

These are not wounds; they are echoes of lives shared fully.

What remains is the imprint of a long companionship—
the way Jan slept with trust beside him,
the way a house becomes safer because
a good dog once walked its length,
measuring its distances with devotion.

Noah was a faithful presence,
a quiet guardian,
a companion whose absence reveals
the depth of his gift.

And in the spaces he guarded so well,
his memory continues its gentle work—
reminding those of us who loved him
that devotion, once given, does not depart.

Noah came to Jan and Gil as an amazing rescue who gave them unconditional love and loyalty for his life. He was Sunny’s best friend and he and Sunny are now running together on the other side of the rainbow bridge! Run free Noah, you have left a hole in our hearts and will always be close in our memories!
