Here at Best Friends, animals have such a special place in our lives. We honor those pets we’ve loved and those who need our help today.

Remembrances
Leaving a personal story, memory, or words of support for a pet’s family is a heartfelt way to pay tribute and provide comfort. As part of your remembrance, we also invite you to leave a virtual token along with your words — similar to our tradition here at the Sanctuary of leaving stones, beloved items, or small toys on the graves of cherished animals.
Today we remember and honor the life of Tommy—a cat whose story was never ordinary and whose love left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
Tommy entered the Patterson family in 2012, rescued as a fragile kitten by Gary, who poured his heart into saving the tiny life in front of him. Gary’s plan had been to give Tommy to his son William, but fate had a different path in store. Tommy quickly chose someone else as his person: Gunhild. And from that moment on, the bond between the two of them was unshakable.
Their connection grew deeper still when Gary passed away in 2014. In those painful, uncertain days, Tommy became Gunhild’s constant companion. He brought comfort in silence, sweetness in sorrow, and a steady presence when the world felt unsteady. Tommy wasn't just a pet—he was family. A guardian of the heart. A reminder that love continues.
Tommy was everything a cat could be and more—sweet and sassy, cuddly and clever, fiercely independent and endlessly loving. He had a personality all his own, and yet, somehow, he always seemed to know just what Gunhild needed. Their devotion to each other was beautiful, almost sacred. They were a pair in the truest sense.
Tommy passed away suddenly on May 17, 2025, of heart failure. His absence is deeply felt—not only by Gunhild, but by the entire Patterson family. The quiet space he leaves behind is immense. The stillness where his footsteps once echoed is a tender ache.
But even in our grief, we are grateful. Grateful for the years we had with him. Grateful for the love he gave so freely. Grateful that, in the end, Tommy gave us all a glimpse of what it means to love without condition and to be loved in return.
Tommy, you were so very loved. You always will be. Thank you for everything.
