Toto

2011 – 2025

Toto was a such a special dog, a friend and comfort to everyone he met. We found him in May of 2011 on Interstate 40 in Kernersville, NC. He ran in and out of traffic, stopping it for miles. After much fanfare, myself and like minded animal lovers helped to rescue him to safety. Little did I know this stinky, dirty, hairy, and quite deplorable little pup would become one of the greatest gifts the universe would ever give me. We recognized early on that Toto was very different than other dogs, He was very gentle, so sweet, and quite perceptive. He seemed to just know what you were feeling or thinking at that moment and he would respond in kind with snuggles if you were sad or playfulness if you were happy. He was adept at reading human emotions and because of this, he became a therapy dog and gave us the gift of helping people through the love of a dog. Toto loved everyone he met, and we visited numerous retirement communities, schools, and libraries. He would sit patiently with every single person, listening intently to the older people's stories or offering a lick to help a child keep reading. We were amazed at his ability to provide comfort to everyone he met and watching him be so kind to every person made us want to be better humans. He never asked for much, except for maybe a scratch behind the ears or just to sit beside you. He was very playful too, zooming around the house playing chase with us or his furry housemates. Toto lived a long and beautiful life, and we feel so grateful to have had 16 wonderful years with him as our loyal family dog. Toto, we will love you forever and look forward to when we will meet again. Thank you for being our very best friend and giving us so much love.

Remembrances

Leaving a personal story, memory, or words of support for a pet’s family is a heartfelt way to pay tribute and provide comfort. As part of your remembrance, we also invite you to leave a virtual token along with your words — similar to our tradition here at the Sanctuary of leaving stones, beloved items, or small toys on the graves of cherished animals.
We will miss you Toto. You were so cuddly, lovable, and adorable too. You also were a wonderful family member and Carmen loved playing with you. We know you are at peace now and will be part of the pack over the 🌈 .

Toto - we still remember when we first met you how amazed we were by your gentle and sweet spirit. Your eyes were so soulful and full of love that right when someone saw you they knew you were the perfect companion and friend to anyone you met. We absolutely adored cuddling you and hearing about all your adventures & antics esp with your brother Scout. It’s no surprise that you were a therapy dog bc that was just your nature and your gift. Though we are very sad, it makes us smile to know that you & your brother, Scout are both are reunited at the rainbow bridge. We know our Webster & Lucy will also be giving you a warm welcome. Enjoy the sunshine and the green grass, sweet boy. You were so lucky to have such a wonderful forever family and they were so lucky to have you. We’ll miss you and loved you so much. As Veena said, thank you for being in our lives. It was a blessing. 🤍
