Remembrances

Leaving a personal story, memory, or words of support for a pet’s family is a heartfelt way to pay tribute and provide comfort. As part of your remembrance, we also invite you to leave a virtual token along with your words — similar to our tradition here at the Sanctuary of leaving stones, beloved items, or small toys on the graves of cherished animals.
Precious Babs was your much loved, big, beautiful yet semi feral kitty companion. Her exact birthdate is unknown, but she was ~14 years old when sadly she passed from hyperthyroidism & attendant health issues on 11/17/24.

Babs was a gorgeous Turkish Van or Turkish Van mix kitty, with very soft fur. She got too fat to properly care for some of her fur, so you obligingly brushed her. She enjoyed being brushed a lot. Around the time Babs was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, she started losing weight. You brought her to a vet who prescribed the correct medication & in the right format (transdermal), so you could administer it to her. You did a lot of research into hypothyroidism & asked the right questions to ensure Babs got transdermal medicine & the proper care.

Babs was skittish because she hadn’t been out of the room she shared with her sisters Pebbles & Chippy for maybe 10 plus years. She was therefore not entirely socialized to you. Pebbles’ unexpected death on 11/18/22 upset Babs & Chippy terribly & traumatized them. They both became more fearful & more feral. Still they had a large room with lots of windows to look out onto the world & view the birds & butterflies safely, away from harm. Some of your neighbors had been very cruel to any stray cats in the shared yard.

Babs, Chippy & Pebbles had warmth when it was cold outside, & coolness when it was hot. They also had plenty of good food & fresh water, basic health care provided by you, toys to entertain them, & safe spaces in their safe room. You had set up carriers under the bed & in the closet, & made them comfy for all 3 of the sisters. So Babs, Chippy & Pebbles all had spots to which they could retreat & stay until the perceived threat was gone.

Babs became less feral shortly before she died. She looked forward to you coming into the room & spending time with her. She usually didn’t mind the transdermal medicine being rubbed on her ears, but she disliked the ear cleaning you had to do because her poor ears would become encrusted with past administrations of the medication even though you carefully used the right amount of it & made sure it was rubbed in properly. She was your brave baby girl when it came to getting her essential medicine.

Babs loved you a ton in her own way & she still loves you in Heaven. She knew that you loved her & she knows that you continue to love her. She awaits you in Heaven where you will join her 1 day. Meanwhile, she is cuddling & playing with Pebbles, Spike, Josephine, & all your other beloved fur babies that have passed. She’s an Angel looking out for you & watching over your remaining fur babies on Earth.

God bless & keep Babs,
Melanie Melzar
