Acacia

2013 – 2024

After following Best Friends "virtually" for years, we visited the Sanctuary for the first time in February 2019. We spent three days volunteering, and we stayed on site in the cabins. One day, we volunteered with the cats, and wanted to welcome an "overnight guest" in our cabin. One of the perceptive staff members suggested Acacia, a beautiful, almost-toothless tabby--a longtime resident originally from Louisiana. Her calm, curious, loving demeanor and her snuggle prowess won us over. Best Friends worked with us to get her safely to the Midwest where Acacia enjoyed living in a one-hundred-year-old home. Then she made a grand, cross-country drive--which she legitimately loved--to settle into the beautiful mid-coast of Maine, where she lived her absolute best life. She loved walks and rolling in the grass (on a leash), napping in the sun, and watching marine life from her windows. She loved her very special human, Bill, who understood her like no one else. A brain tumor--quickly diagnosed thanks to Bill's attentiveness and care--took Acacia much too soon. We will be forever grateful to Best Friends for rescuing Acacia and entrusting her to us.

Remembrances

Leaving a personal story, memory, or words of support for a pet’s family is a heartfelt way to pay tribute and provide comfort. As part of your remembrance, we also invite you to leave a virtual token along with your words — similar to our tradition here at the Sanctuary of leaving stones, beloved items, or small toys on the graves of cherished animals.
