Didi
It was a cold rainy day at Best Friends Los Angeles at the beginning of COVID and the shelter asked volunteers to foster dogs to help reduce staff hours. Didi, a 7 year old chihuahua was skin and bones and looked so miserable in her kennel, I chose her to foster and I brought her home for a week. And she bonded with my wife Lyle instantly! Of course she never left! Didi was part of our family for 5 years until a sudden illness sent her to the rainbow bridge at age 12. She was a tough cookie at first, she barely tolerated me for about a year! 🙂 She was a third wheel to our two other little dogs and loved to swoop in and steal their food, but she made a place for herself in our home. Patience pays off and I eventually earned Didi’s trust and I would look down to see she had cuddled up next to me with her head on my lap. But she loved Lyle and followed her around the house, and would watch Lyle practicing violin. First in line for breakfast or dinner, relentlessly protective with the spirit of a huge dog, lover of treats, excellent traveling companion, and champion sleeper always making a nest of blankets on the couch to sleep in. This little ten pound soul has left a huge hole in our home. Rest in peace little girl.
